What's your take on Georges St-Pierre?

Journal Entry: Thu May 5, 2011, 10:04 PM

I for one am not a big fan but I do recognize what sets him apart from other fighters and all his accomplishments.

What say you?

UFC has always been about winning. If you look at the early Royse Gracie fights in UFC, they are not the most exciting fights - until you realize that BJJ is only about winning. I saw a quote from GSP on a magazine cover recently; he said: "It is the not the strongest man who wins the fight - it is the most efficient." And I think that was Gracie - and is now GSP - in a nutshell.

GSP is one of the best fighters in the UFC today.

I know a lot of people rag on him for not being 'exciting' but here's the thing: This isn't WWE. I'm saying that as a guy who loves pro wrestling.

Cage fighters are paid for winning and retaining championship gold. So GSP wins and he retains championship gold.

Simple as that.

GSP is indeed one of the best today, he's leaps and bounds beyond the competition.

But my disappointment in GSP's recent performances comes from my understanding that when someone's fighting in the main event, you can't blame people to look for excitement and have higher expectations. Even more so when the one that's headlining is a champion, specially from someone as talented as GSP.

I suppose.

From what I heard though he did actually say he was 'afraid' walking into the octagon with Jake Shields so it might be that he was unwilling to run risks due to that.

He said he was "afraid"? Wow, I'll look into that, thanks.

So I heard.

From a friend so take it with a grain of salt.

I think he's an excellent fighter.

If you ever read "The art of war" or the "Book of five rings", they talk about how a defensive strategy will yield the most success in a fight. GSP takes that to heart and never throws a punch that will not hit. His fights may be "boring" but if you look closer at his style you can see all the technical nuances of his style.

GSP is an excellent fighter. I think his biggest flaw is letting his love of being champion and winning cause him to play it safe too often.

GSP has also been getting hated on for unjust reasons lately. While I feel that he, as a champion, should strive more to finish fights lets not forget he nearly pulled Hardy`s arm off in a Kimura and was completely trying to finish. As well he jabbed the fuck out of KOS in a wholly one-sided fight while really not being threatened at all, besides when has GSP been known for a consistent KO punch?

With this last fight his eye got fucked up in the 2nd round so he definitely played it safe and I bet most people would in his place. Not to mention that Shields did not play to his own strenghts that fight or make the fight very exciting.

All that said, GSP is an awesome athlete and fighter, but I think he does play it safe often which gets in the way of being an exciting fighter. People expect a lot of others without any consideration, it is bullshit.

I personally think he got himself to blame for being under the microscope by saying he wanted to be remembered as the greatest, that's gotta raise a lot of eyebrows haha!

Kidding aside, I just wish he fights his demons and be explosive again.
