WORK IN PROGRESS

This is my work for the third contest winner. It's just 30% done so cut my rendering some slack for now, ok? T_T

Anyway, on to my burning question!

I'd love to get your thoughts as to what background color to choose to make the character "pop"?

I found myself resorting to my "blue background tendency" and I'm getting tried of seeing that myself. Also, I'd like to learn WHY that certain color works so I'd understand the theory behind it and won't be asking the same question again.

Any takers???

Well I'm late on this one (sorry) but here I go...

I notice you use a lot of subtle hints of orange in your work, and that blue, in particular, is orange's greatest rival thus they will forever battle to the death for your attention (no, just kidding, but seriously, I wish color theory was taught this way) On a serious note, they're contrasting colors and whether you realize it or not, you've executed them in one the most beautiful ways that many artists completely over look; through balance. Most people assume when it comes to contrasting colors, it has to be %50/%50, but that is so not the case. To make a picture really pop, you have to trick the eye into wonder why it's popping, aka, don't make it so obvious, which is something you've actually mastered by the looks of it.

Another reason that particular blue is so addicting, is it's actually a very interesting choice balanced between a cool and warm color. It begins to lean more towards green than blue and is one of the rare exceptions where it can actually be used as both energizing and calming (That's why they tend to choose that color for blue sour candy)

I'd say whatever you do, keep that balance of orange and blue (hold crap, that rhymed) because it really works for this piece. I really don't know anything about the character, but as a samurai, you could always go the classic rout of battling it out in a grassy field (Samurai Rebellion style) with a nice blue sky overhead. The green could also add to the energy of the piece, if you mix a good bit of yellow in there and maybe have some good lighting beaming off of the sun.

As of now that solid blue unfortunately doesn't support the intense action you probably wanted to portray on this piece. More rendering will fix that to some extent. But generally it doesn't suit the mood of the piece (you are using a bright primary color scheme) and his character (vicious killer).

One suggestion I have would be to take a warmer hue that you already have on the character, desaturate it on the color picker, then apply onto your BG. Then come in on top with brighter reds ala blood streaks.

A tough question. I'd probably go with either light blue, since it makes me think of a bright sky (and it would be in contrast with the orange of his clothing) --- or, some sepia/brown/yellowish hues, to make it feel like the action happens on a dusty road, with the dust filling the air...
...or both the colours. Ah, I'm not very good at giving advice.. ^^;

I love his expression, like he's madly enjoying the fight! :D

Blue being a cool colour sits further back (on a 2d plane, but this is only relative to the saturation values) than warmer hues... I tend to start with a desaturated blue for a bg to determine lights sources, always a good choice really! I would definitely choose a dull/desat colour for the bg as this is pretty action based so far, maybe delve into a greener hue of blue for the slightest of changes! Looking rad for 30% though mate :D
